Couples Counseling

Ready to reconnect?

Making relationships work, in a healthy way, for the long haul is one of the hardest things that ANY of us will ever do. There are just so many ways we can get all tangled up in the confusion that happens when two different human beings with different ideas, desires and backgrounds come together to create something new.

But it is possible, and goodness knows it’s worth working for. So if your relationship is struggling, and you’re tired of trying to figure it out on your own and ready to get some objective, outside guidance that will really help, reach out to our specialists.

What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy, sometimes known as marriage counseling, is a type of psychotherapy in which a licensed therapist works with couples to help improve their romantic relationship.

While couples counseling usually includes both partners, there are times when only one partner works with the therapist alone. The therapist uses specialized therapeutic methods to help couples gain insight about their relationship. This helps develop better ways of relating to each other.

Couples may go to couples therapy because of specific challenges they are dealing with such as communication issues, affairs, sexual difficulties, or are determining whether to stay together.

What to expect in couples counseling

During your first couples therapy session, you will discuss the issues you are having, your relationship history, and your relationship goals. Your couples counselor will look into the main issues and relationship stressors. Joint therapy sessions will help you both learn skills to help solidify the relationship, such as:

  • Problem solving

  • Open communication

  • Discussing your differences effectively

You and your partner will both learn together how to identify issues without blame and examine the possibilities for improvements. The therapist will ask questions to help you communicate openly and honestly, which assists with understanding your differences and feelings.

Gradually, you will both develop new ways of approaching your differences without conflicts and how to express your desires rather than criticizing.

When to consider couples counseling

There are many reasons to think about going to couples therapy including:

  • You continue to have the same argument over and over without resolution

  • You are finding it hard to make decisions together without conflict

  • You are thinking about breaking up

  • You have differing parenting styles

  • You are experiencing financial strain

  • A major stressor took place like infidelity or trauma

  • You are having problems with affection or intimacy

  • It is getting harder to communicate

  • You are at a crossroads and don’t know how to move forward
